Speed (F3F) Competition 4th November 2007 - Butts Lane East Bowl

Report by Julian Perrott

After a bit of waiting round to let the early morning breeze settle better onto the East Bowl at Butts Brow seven pilots set about the task of whipping round the course...

Conditions varied from average to "yawn" all pilots running 3 rounds in succession with a slow crow after each one to satisfy the CD.

The East Bowl is not the best F3F slope available to the club as there are quite a few trees potentially interfering with low level passes but everybody managed to stay away from side obstacles John Phillips, of course, flirting with them more than most and muttering something about a chainsaw...

Fastest time of the day went to Gary Harrision (Aris) with a 62.96 but it was Jim Taylor who managed to get the best out of the conditions flying his venerable Cito.

Ray Wells flew his first few F3F legs and Colin Lennox also graced us with his entry, good to have you both in the competition.

Many thanks to everyone for generally helping out with the running and buzzing of the course. The results after 6 rounds flown with 1 discard are:

1st Jim Taylor 4811.5
2nd Gary Harrison 4791.8
3rd JohnPhillips 4679.4
4th Tom Noble 4552.5
5th Julian Perrott 4390.1
6th Colin Lennox 1697.3
7th Ray Wells  455.0

Aerobatic Competition 30th September 2007 - Butts Lane East Bowl

Report by Julian Perrott

A slightly overcast but bright day with a gently easterly breeze welcomed the competitors. We waited and sport flew for an hour or so to let the breeze build up as it often does on this slope mid morning, once I was happy that there was enough puff not to disadvantage early starters too much we got under way.

There were 7 manoeuvres judged by 3 judges with a maximum of 10 points per judge per manouvre (giving a maximum score of (7 x 10 x 3) = 210.

The required order was:

Big Loop
Axial Roll Right
Cuban Eight
Axial Roll Left
Stall Turn Left
Stall Turn Right
4 Point Roll

After a little confusion as to what exactly constituted a "Stall Turn Left" we agreed that as long as 2 different directions were flown in succession then the points would be awarded for each in turn...

Eight competitors flew the event which was the best turn out for a club competition for 2 years, well done to all!

The wind remained reasonably consistent with no one having any difficulty gaining enough height to perform any of the required manoeuvres. Once all was done the results were:

1st JohnPhillips 164
2nd Julian Perrott 163
3rd Matthew 148
4th Terry 143
5th Tom Noble 132
6th Jim Taylor 102
7th Roy Sharp   81
8th Colin Lennox 49

Well done to John, a close run thing and unfortunately for me the addition of the scores is correct.

Many thanks to all who turned up and helped run the competition.

Club Cross country 1st July 2007 – Long Man. Report by Julian Perrott

It was a brave few members who dared to turn up for this years Cross Country Competition as we were faced with a SW wind of about 30mph with a threat of rain which as we all know can appear in a matter of minutes with that wind and direction.

Unfortunately due to a nasty back problem I was not able to fly myself, I really didn’t want to have to call an ambulance due to a stumble (and lose a model!).

I had to set a less challenging course that we may have had because the last thing I wanted to was to tempt the competitors into destroying models for the sake of a few points. Four turning points were set up around the bowl with a spot landing just left of centre.

The scoring was set as 10 points for every flag reached, 1 point for every turn (the rules were changed to define a turn as just making it behind the flag) and 10 points for a hairy spot landing!

So the competitors set off with a variety of suitable and non-suitable models!

After an hour or so of collecting models from the front of the Long Man and generally coping with the conditions the results were:

1st           John Phillips       63           (4 flags reached, 13 turns, spot landing)
2nd          Tom Noble          50           (4 flags reached, 10 turns)
3rd           Jim Taylor            47           (4 flags reached, 7 turns)
4th           Ray Wells             30           (3 flags reached)

So, well done John, a deserved winner. Thank you to all the competitors and let’s hope next year we have a few thermals. (Note to self: Get back fixed and bring 60” screamer to next Cross Country Competition just in case).
