League R2 13th December 2009, Butts Brow N Slope

An early meet made sure that the air had absolutely no chance to warm even with the weak December sun. The course was set-up on the North slope of Butts Brow with a fairly consistent 15-20mph bitter wind.

This became a survival of the warmest as the North slope offers no shelter from the wind and 2 degree temperature, running the centre of the course was more a punishment than fun.

Allen and Ray had issue with their steeds and we rushed through 6 rounds with each pilot flying 3 rounds at a time with ‘crow through’ at eye level between rounds.

The top 3 were only separated by 41 points with 1 discard, a very close competition with Julian Perrott coming out on top! Fastest time of the day was Garry Harrison with a 43.45 some 6 seconds quicker than the next fastest, however consistency won the day (I am glad to say!).

League R5 14th March 2010, Long Man NW Slope

After a lot of cancelled rounds due to the consistent winter we had we met at the Long Man with a NW forecast and it looking like WNW. The trudge up the hill and a little procrastinating on the SW face we decided that there was too much North wind and reluctantly continued to the NW slope.

The weather gods were on our side with a mildly thermic 15mph NW with some refreshing sunshine from time to time to take the sting off the wind. It was great to see a couple of new F3F racers with Jason (?) and John Smith gracing us with their presence. Both flew solidly, Jason’s Dugon looking a little twitchy out of the turns on the elevator but showed some potential, John’s Acacia 2 felt light with no ballast and he had a good go at flying an F3F course for the first time, unfortunately (and fortunately) he spotted that his flight pack was not holding charge properly so only completed 2 rounds . We look forward to welcoming them both to F3F events in the future!

Other notable events included myself turning up on the slope having accidentally deleting the model memory for my Skorpion on my 12FG the night before (rather easy to do as the ‘are you sure’ prompt screen for deleting model memory is almost the same as the ‘are you sure’ screen for changing model memories...), then getting less and less down elevator during the 1st and 2nd round and the left V-Tail sheering the V-Tail wing joiner on landing, seems like it must have been failing in flight, one lucky boy! Ray managed to use his shin as a landing aid and made a real mess of his model (foam core, balsa skin), but he was adamant that it was fixable, lucky it wasn’t a moulded model.

But the highlight of the day was Gary flying a 37.28 with his RaceM which looked very well dialled in, he took the win some 400+ points ahead of Tom Noble in second and John Stiles in third managing his first top 3 finish.
