ESSA has got another administrator to help with the web site, as Julian is a very busy man and does more than enough for the club, it was decided at the last club meeting that the web site could benefit from having another administrator to help keep our site fresh and up to date. please don't hesitate to get more involved by sending photos and reviews of your days flying. to allen@eastsussexsa.co.uk,

Another Allen's bbq day

I arranged another mini Southdowns fly-in for Wednesday the 23rd June, we ended up flying at Mill Hill that overlooks Shoreham, I had not flown there before and although the landing took some getting used to, it is a good site with pretty good lift on poor lift days. About 8 non local flyers came down from the Kent area and a load of locals came and went as the day on.

All in all it was a great day I flew every plane I took, had my first real go at combat and met loads of new faces.

Only one main fatality of the day, My poor 1986 139" Soaron Sunshine, went to far back, a little turbulence put the wing through the barbed wire fence.

Raven strikes back

Thanks Dave,

Jason's day at butts

I found myself at butts lane on tuesday flying a twenty year old phase 6 and the maiden of my new cappuccino (valenta models). I chucked the phase six off first to see what the lift was like because the wind was dropping off once in a while. "The lift was really good" and after 20 minutes i decided to do my old "lets see if i can thermal above the houses below with a symmetrical wing trick" bearing in mind there were lots of thermals about. Needless to say the wind dropped off and i made it back to the top of the slope when a tree got in the way. At first i thought "no way i'm crawling through the thorn bushes and climbing up to the top of a tree" (cause that's where it was) and then i thought "radio gear" so off i went. I shimmied through the bushes on my bum, found a long branch and got half way up the tree. After a long time i knocked the plane out of the tree in to a thorn bush, ripped it out of that, got back up to the top of the slope, chucked the cappuccino off, trimmed it out, landed, and stood wondering why i felt so knackered. As it tuns out, the lift got very good afer my little treck and i would recommend the cappuccino if your after a 2.5 type mouldy. As for the phase 6, i don't know? I'm still pulling thorn needles out of my butt.

Salto Elevator Failure

I was at Bopeep on Tuesday 13th April with my Baudis 4m Salto and very keen to try my new keyring video camera (Thanks Allen!). I Velcro-ed it to the port wing tip and launched the model. The lift was exceptional; soon the model was a spec in the sky. I started to throw it about and looped it consecutively several times, remembering our aerobatic competition a couple of weeks ago I thought I would try an inverted loop. With plenty of height I rolled the model and dived inverted, the canopy facing the slope. I pushed the stick forward and the model carried on diving straight down. This is when the world started moving in slow motion. I thought about the mess the glider would make at the bottom of the slope and that pulling out with positive stick might be a good move soon. I rolled the glider away from the slope and pulled full up, I remember wondering if the wings would break. The Salto shot up like a missile and stalled at the top. It was then the fun started as I discovered that the elevator was now pretty useless, the model almost uncontrollable in pitch, all it would do was zoom and stall. I fed in full down trim and full down, the model started to fly in a nose high attitude but in between the now smaller stalls I could turn it. I put the brakes out and lost enough height to attempt a slope side< landing. I was expecting the Salto to tip stall. However, I was lucky on the second circuit to turn the model into wind and make a hard landing. Looking over the model I found that starboard elevator was jammed in the full up position, and its servo was stripped. Lucky escape, the only damage appears to be one torn aileron control horn mounting, from the hard landing and the damaged elevator and stripped servo. Video of the incident: You Tube Link
